Principal Investigator Application

Apply to Develop and Implement a Retrospective Analysis of AMSN PRISM Award® Recipients.

Are you a nurse researcher with an interest in healthy practice environments?

The Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses (AMSN) would like to offer you the opportunity to contribute to the state of the science in recognizing healthy practice environments and the key characteristics of units that have demonstrated excellence in medical-surgical nursing.

Description and Role

AMSN is committed to recognizing healthy practice environments in medical-surgical nursing units. Through the collaborative work of The Medical Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) and AMSN, the PRISM Award (Premier Recognition in the Specialty of Med-Surg) was unveiled at the 2012 AMSN Convention.

This is the first award of its kind established in the specialty of medical-surgical nursing, recognizing exemplary practice designation. A dedicated group of volunteers developed and refined a process to review applications and select those medical-surgical units that demonstrate excellence in six categories: leadership, recruitment and retention, evidence-based practice, patient outcomes, healthy practice environment, and lifelong learning.

Since January 2013 more than 50 applications have been reviewed and 19 AMSN PRISM Awards have been presented.

AMSN would like to conduct a retrospective analysis of the data provided by AMSN PRISM Award units to identify key characteristics of successful applicants. To achieve this goal, AMSN is seeking a doctorally prepared nurse researcher to serve as the principle investigator (PI) to design and carry out the analysis.

Using the written applications from PRISM Award recipient units, the PI will analyze the quantitative and qualitative data provided for predominant themes and characteristics common to units that are selected to receive the award.

As PI you would be responsible for proposal development, implementation of the research study, and preparation of a report of the study findings to the AMSN Board of Directors. You will also be expected to publish the study findings in the MEDSURG NURSING journal and deliver a presentation or poster at the AMSN Annual Convention held each fall.
