Schneck Medical Center’s 2 North inpatient medical-surgical unit has been awarded the prestigious AMSN PRISM Award®. The award recognizes those medical-surgical units that consistently demonstrate exceptional nursing practice, effective leadership, a healthy practice environment and evidence-based, positive clinical outcomes.

To date, Schneck is only the second medical-surgical unit in the state of Indiana to achieve this national honor.

The award, which stands for “Premier Recognition In the Specialty of Med-Surg,” is the first of its kind honoring med-surg nursing units in the United States. It is co-sponsored by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB). The award is given to outstanding acute care/med-surg units or adult/pediatric units classified as med-surg.

The AMSN PRISM Award acknowledges Schneck’s journey to optimal outcomes and exceptional patient care. Unit 2 North was chosen for sustained excellence in six categories, scoring at the advanced level in all categories. These are as follows: recruitment and retention of competent staff members, evidence-based practice, positive patient outcomes, healthy practice environment, lifelong learning of unit staff members, and effective leadership.

The AMSN PRISM Award acknowledges Schneck’s journey to optimal outcomes and exceptional patient care.

“2 North at Schneck is a solid unit in all areas, and very deserving of the AMSN PRISM Award,” said Marisa Streelman, MSN, RN, CMSRN, AMSN Treasurer. “The professional nurse is responsible for the individual practice, but it takes a dynamic, energetic, and committed group of professionals working as a team to achieve and sustain outstanding patient outcomes and high staff satisfaction.”

Streelman presented the award to the nurses and other hospital leaders and executives on May 30, 2018, during a special ceremony at the hospital.

“This award demonstrates the compassion and commitment of our 2 North medical-surgical nurses to provide high-quality inpatient care,” said Venetia Green, Director of Inpatient Nursing Services at Schneck. “There are over 5,500 hospitals in the nation and to be one of only 30 recognized is truly remarkable.”

About the AMSN PRISM Award
Hoping to inspire nurses to strive for the highest levels of patient safety and quality, AMSN and MSNCB launched the award in October 2012. The award also reflects the compassion, commitment, and connection that characterize med-surg nurses.

Specifically, the award celebrates units that exhibit:

  • Effective leadership
  • Recruitment and retention of competent staff members
  • Evidence-based practice
  • Positive patient outcomes
  • A healthy practice environment
  • Lifelong learning of unit staff members

There are more than 600,000 medical-surgical nurses practicing in the United States today, making them the single largest group of specialty nurses working in hospital settings. Med-surg nurses oversee a broad spectrum of patient care responsibilities, another reason the acronym “PRISM” was chosen for the award. View complete information about the AMSN PRISM Award.
