Renal Transplant and Endocrinology Unit, St. David’s North Austin Medical Center

The Renal Transplant and Endocrinology Unit at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, Austin, TX, has received the prestigious AMSN PRISM Award, an honor recognizing exceptional nursing practice, leadership, and outcomes in medical-surgical units.

The Renal Transplant and Endocrinology Unit is the first med-surg unit in Austin—and the 12th in the United States as of March 2016—to receive the award. It was presented to the nurses and medical center officials on March 22, 2016, during a ceremony in St. David’s auditorium.

"We are pleased to be recognized by AMSN for our efforts to provide high-quality patient care in the Renal Transplant and Endocrinology Unit," said Nancy Eisenhuth, director of medical-surgical specialty units and infusion services at St. David’s.

“We are pleased to be recognized by AMSN for our efforts to provide high-quality patient care in the Renal Transplant and Endocrinology Unit,” Nancy Eisenhuth, director of medical-surgical specialty units and infusion services at St. David’s. “This award demonstrates the compassion, commitment, and connection that characterize our med-surg nurses.”

Representing AMSN and MSNCB at the ceremony were Dr. Linda H. Yoder, PhD, MBA, RN, AOCN,FAAN, AMSN President-Elect; and Kathleen J. Lattavo, MSN, RN,CMSRN, AMSN Past President. Both are well-known nursing leaders from Austin, TX.

The award, which stands for “Premier Recognition In the Specialty of Med-Surg,” is the first of its kind honoring med-surg nursing units in the United States. It is co-sponsored by AMSN and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB). The award is given to outstanding acute care/med-surg units or adult/pediatric units classified as med-surg.

Award criteria include effective leadership, staff recruitment and retention, evidence-based practice, positive patient outcomes, a healthy practice environment and lifelong learning of unit staff members.

The Renal Transplant and Endocrinology Unit’s award will be announced at the 2016 AMSN Convention in Washington, DC, September 29-October 2, 2016; on the AMSN and MSNCB Websites and social media sites; and in both organizations’ publications.

About the AMSN PRISM Award
Hoping to inspire nurses to strive for the highest levels of patient safety and quality, AMSN and MSNCB launched the award in October 2012. The award also reflects the compassion, commitment, and connection that characterize med-surg nurses.

Specifically, the award celebrates units that exhibit:

  • Effective leadership
  • Recruitment and retention of competent staff members
  • Evidence-based practice
  • Positive patient outcomes
  • A healthy work environment
  • Lifelong learning of unit staff members

There are more than 600,000 medical-surgical nurses practicing in the United States today, making them the single largest group of specialty nurses working in hospital settings. Med-surg nurses oversee a broad spectrum of patient care responsibilities, another reason the acronym “PRISM” was chosen for the award.
