The B5 Medical-Surgical Unit, Methodist Hospital, Jefferson Health, in Philadelphia, PA recently received the AMSN PRISM Award® an honor recognizing exceptional nursing practice, leadership, and outcomes in hospital medical-surgical units.

Linda Yoder, PhD, MBA, RN, AOCN,FAAN, AMSN President, presented the unit staff with their award during a special celebration in June, 2017 at the hospital.

Co-sponsored by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB), the PRISM Award stands for “Premier Recognition In the Specialty of Med-Surg.”

“The AMSN PRISM Award is a public symbol for the unit’s journey to optimal outcomes and exceptional patient care. By receiving the award, we are acknowledged for qualities that define excellence,” said Mary Beth Edger, RN, MSN, MHA, NEA-BC, Vice-President of Nursing at Jefferson’s Methodist Hospital.

“I myself started as a med-surg nurse, and am so very proud of my B5 nursing colleagues for earning the AMSN PRISM Award,” said Mary Beth Edger, RN, MSN, MHA, NEA-BC, Vice-President of Nursing at Jefferson’s Methodist Hospital. “This is premier recognition in the med-surg nursing specialty. It recognizes the collective achievements and contributions of each nursing staff member on the B5 Med-Surg unit."

"The AMSN PRISM Award is a public symbol for the unit’s journey to optimal outcomes and exceptional patient care. By receiving the award, we are acknowledged for qualities that define excellence. On behalf of my colleagues at Methodist, I want to personally thank Linda Yoder, AMSN, and MSNCB for this exceptional honor and congratulate B5 once again for its work on behalf of our patients, families, and community.”

According to AMSN, there are more than 600,000 medical-surgical nurses practicing in the United States today, making them the single largest group of specialty nurses working in hospital settings. Med-surg nurses oversee a broad spectrum of patient care responsibilities, which inspired the acronym “PRISM” to be chosen as the name for the award.
