AMSN Accomplishments - 2017

  • Began an evaluation study to determine the outcomes of the Clinical Leadership Development Program (CLDP) designed for clinical nurses at the bedside.
  • Developed and implemented board competencies and evaluation tool.
  • Developed the definition of medical-surgical nursing and its distinguishing characteristics.
  • Presented 10 AMSN PRISM Awards. This program recognizes exemplary medical-surgical nursing units.
  • Collaborated with AAACN to review and recommend evidence-based care transition hand-off tools to help nurses manage transitions of patients across all settings.  
  • AMSN’s certification affiliate, the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board, has over 28,500 nurses certified in med-surg, and care coordination and transition management.
  • Achieved record-breaking attendance of 1,147 participants at the 2016 annual convention in Washington, DC.
  • Selected a Principal Investigator and began conducting a retrospective analysis of the data provided by AMSN PRISM Award units to identify key characteristics of high-performing medical-surgical units.
  • Collaborated with ANA/CDC to provide infection control and prevention education opportunities for med-surg nurses.
  • Participating in the ANA Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation initiative.
  • Members approved bylaws revisions to change the board of directors’ selection process to eliminate board elections by the membership. The Nominating Committee will continue to vet applicants and recommend the most qualified member for each open position for board approval.
  • Collaborated with APNA to develop protocols and standards for the medical-surgical nurse providing care for patients who have attempted/contemplated suicide.
  • Collaborated with ARIN to assess needs and provide education resources for med-surg nurses caring for patients undergoing radiologic and imaging procedures.
  • Member of the Nursing Community. Signed on to several initiatives.
  • Published the Scope and Standards of Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice, 6th Edition.
  • Onboarded a new CEO, Terri Hinkley.

Goals for 2018

  • Take a leadership position in advocating for staffing that promotes optimal patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with other professional organizations to enhance healthy practice environments.
  • Support and promote evidence-based practice in medical-surgical nursing.
  • Enhance med-surg nurses’ learning about care coordination and transition management.
  • Continue relationship with APNA related to behavioral health issues that occur on med-surg units.
  • Explore the application of QSEN competencies to med-surg nursing practice.
  • Implement a volunteer chair competencies and evaluation tool.

2016

AMSN Accomplishments - 2016

  • Collaborated with American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) to develop protocols and standards for the medical-surgical nurse providing care for the patient who has attempted/contemplated suicide.
  • Celebrated AMSN’s 25th anniversary with online and convention events.
  • Developed a position statement to support the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative and advocate for the essential role of the med-surg nurse in providing quality care to cancer patients.
  • Collaborated with the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) in the following initiatives:
    • FailSafe program – A program in which a health care facility registers 10 or more nurses to take the CMSRN exam within a year. The nurse gets more than one chance to pass the exam, and the health care facility doesn't pay until the nurse passes.
    • AMSN PRISM Award – A program to recognize exemplary medical-surgical nursing unit. Seven awards were presented this year.
  • Expanded our online community for members to communicate and share information.
  • Participated as a strategic partner in the Alliance to Advance Patient Nutrition.
  • Member of the Nursing Community. Signed on to several initiatives.

AMSN Goals for 2017

  • Conduct a longitudinal study to 1) examine the leadership development needs and practices of medical-surgical nurses at the bedside and 2) examine the effects of the Clinical Leadership Development Program (CLDP)on developmental needs and leadership
  • behaviors of med-surg nurses at the bedside.
  • Publish the Scope and Standards of Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice, 6th Edition.
  • Collaborate with American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) to determine an evidence-based tool(s) that can help nurses manage the transition of patients (hand-off) from acute care to ambulatory care or other settings.
  • Provide resources to increase member knowledge of acuity-based staffing.
  • Disseminate the updated definition of medical-surgical nursing.
  • Propose a bylaws amendment related to the Board of Directors election process to the membership.

2015

AMSN Accomplishments - 2015

  • Developed the Clinical Leadership Development Program (CDLP) for clinical nurses at the bedside. Collaborated with Health Stream to create an online platform to make the 10 module program available to nurses.
  • Published the Core Curriculum for Medical-Surgical Nursing, Fifth Edition.
  • Collaborating with APNA to develop protocols and standards for the medical-surgical nurse providing care for the patient who has attempted/contemplated suicide.
  • Established a task force to define medical-surgical nursing and its distinguishing characteristics.
  • Collaborated with American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) in Care Coordination and Transition Management.
  • Began piloting an online community for members to communicate and share information.
  • Collaborated with Marlene Kramer and her research on the Elements of Magnetism III.    
  • Successfully implemented activities to enhance the attendee’s social experience at the AMSN convention.
  • Participated as a strategic partner in the Alliance to Advance Patient Nutrition.
  • Participated in NAQC and ANA Organizational Affiliate activities.
  • Member of the Nursing Community. Signed on to several initiatives.
  • AMSN has a record attendance of 1,129 participants at the 24th annual convention.
  • Collaborating with the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) in the following initiatives:
    • FailSafe program – A program in which a health care facility registers 10 or more nurses to take the CMSRN exam within a year. The nurse gets more than one chance to pass the exam, and the health care facility doesn't pay until the nurse passes. 
    • AMSN PRISM Award – A program to recognize exemplary medical-surgical nursing unit. Received five applications.  Nine awards have been presented.

  • Collaborated with Gannett on the Intensive CE Series (ICE) to offer the AMSN Certification Review Course (CRC).
  • Participated with ANA "Behavioral Health Dialogue” group.
  • Participated in the ANA Scope and Standards workgroup.
  • Participated in the Partnership for Patients initiative.
  • Collaborated with Lippincott Williams and Wilkins (LWW) to review and endorse their Online Nursing Solutions product suite.
  • Implemented strategies to promote and support the self-sustainment of local chapters.
  • Implemented an online toolkit to support AMSN volunteers in leading committees and task forces.
  • Implemented fresh, innovative ways to enhance the attendee’s social experience at the AMSN annual convention.

  • Initiated and funded a $50,000 evidenced-based research study, "Practices, Clinical Behaviors, Clinical Decision-Making Processes, and Aspirations in Practice of Medical-Surgical Nurses: A Qualitative Study".
  • Participated as a strategic partner in the Alliance to Advance Patient Nutrition.
  • Partnered with HealthStream to market and distribute the AMSN certification preparation course.
  • Redesigned and launched the new AMSN Website (amsn.org).
  • Participated in NQF, NAQC & ANA Organizational Affiliate activities.
  • Member of ANSR & Nursing Community. Signed on to several initiatives.
  • Collaborating with the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) in the following initiatives:

2012

AMSN Accomplishments - 2012

  • Increased members’ awareness of healthy workplace environment practices through the development of a resource toolkit on the AMSN Website and poster provided to all members.
  • Developed Performance/Quality Improvement content for the EBP/Research section of the website.
  • Electronically published the Scope & Standards of Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice, 5th Ed and the Scope & Standards of Medical-Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist Practice, 2nd Ed. Both are complimentary.
  • Developed the AMSN PRISM Award (Premier Recognition in the Specialty of Med-Surg), the first program for recognition of exemplary medical-surgical nursing units, in collaboration with the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB), the AMSN certification partner.
  • Transitioned the former Nurses Nurturing Nurses (N3) program into the AMSN Mentoring Program, featuring self-directed manuals that will help individuals and facilities custom design their own mentoring program. This complimentary resource may be found at www.amsn.org/mentoring.
  • Collaborated with AAACN in the process for developing care coordination competencies for RNs.
  • Participated in NQF & ANA Organizational Affiliate activities.
  • Member of ANSR & Nursing Community. Signed on to several initiatives.
  • Participated in the Joining Forces initiatives.
  • Over 2,300 nurses earned the Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) credential through MSNCB, bringing the total of CMSRNs to 15,000. Presented the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Review Courses to requesting hospitals across the country.

Presented the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Review Courses to requesting hospitals across the country.
  • Collaborated with MSNCB to develop the AMSN PRISM Award (Premier Recognition in the Specialty of Med-Surg), a program for recognition of exemplary medical-surgical nursing units.
